Adult Stem Cells
Adult stem cells possess an exciting palette of biological properties which reflect the natural capability of an organism to heal itself. Stem cells have the tissue regeneration capacity and can promote wound healing.
Adult stem cells are characterized by an almost non-existing potential to arouse the immune system and the ability to modulate the body’s immune answer in such a way that the inflammation is diminished. This makes adult stem cells safe for autologous application (cells used for cell therapy are obtained from the patient himself) and for allogeneic use (the stem cell donor and the patient that receives the cells are different non-related individuals). In both cases no symptoms of rejection as known from the standard transplantation medicine will appear.
Finally, adult stem cells are attracted by injured tissue. After being applied into the bloodstream adult stem cells accumulate in the body at the sites of the tissue damage where the healing process is needed.
For therapeutic purpose adult stem cells can be easily isolated from almost all human tissues. Human bone marrow, adipose tissue or umbilical cord belong to the common sources of adult stem cells.
